PROSPERITY AND AUSPICIOUSNESS, 2024
Embroidery patches, silk
82 x122cm (32 x 48 in)
This artwork intertwines shared cultural symbolism between China and Taiwan with contemporary political tensions. Inspired by traditional Chinese decorative painting, renowned for featuring elements like peony flowers and chickens, the focal point is the peony – a longstanding symbol of prosperity in Chinese culture. Shaped to resemble China, it takes the form of a chicken, symbolizing auspiciousness due to similar Mandarin pronunciations.
The presence of strategically positioned fighter jets around Taiwan reflects current geopolitical tensions, introducing an intriguing layer of cultural symbolism. In Mandarin, "jet" sounds like "chicken," connecting the ominous military aircraft with the traditional symbol of auspiciousness. This juxtaposition serves as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by Taiwan, with China's recent displays of military power accentuating the ongoing campaign of harassment, threats, and intimidation.
